GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE
Bits and Pieces
November 20, 1992
Local
Durang comedy at Working Theatre-"Everything in my life works. Except the plumbing, and career, and relationships." So states one of the characters in Christopher Durang's comic play, Laughing Wild, which will be performed by the Working Theatre from November 20 to December 20. Durang's comedy about contemporary urban straight and gay life satirizes considerably more areas, however.
Equity actors Chuck Richie and Paula Duesing portray a long list of characters, including Sally Jessy Raphael, a gay man, a New Age believer, God, a mentally dysfunctional woman, and the Infant of Prague. From this diverse collection, Durang weaves a comic fantasia using his hilarious wit to explore such areas as Catholicism, New Age beliefs, gay life, talk shows, AIDS, and the tensions of present day city life.
ли
Such a comic stew has been present in this gay playwright's earliest works. One of his first produced plays, Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You (1980), brought both fame, and in some circles, infamy, for its hard-hitting satire of Catholic dogma.
Tickets are $10 (or $7.50 for students and seniors) and may be reserved by calling the Working Theatre at 696-9600. Remaining tickets will be on sale at the door. Free on-site parking is available. Thurs., Fri., Sat. at 8, Sun. at 3 The Working Theatre is at 2592 West 14th Street, in Tremont. *
